Strategic thinking is all it takes to get the patio fine-tuned for warm weather relaxation. If you picture it as an extension of your home – one worthy of a makeover – it’s easy to imagine yourself enjoying a little outdoor time there. Consider some patio trends for the coming season to get your creative juices flowing.
Start From the Ground Up
Before you begin planting containers or uncovering furniture, give the patio foundation a once over. If there are missing stones or cracks in the cement, now is the time for an upgrade. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Design the flooring using anything from brick to stone pavers to cement, but make sure to install a solid edging, too. Use something practical that works well with your design like a solid cement lip, a short, brick wall or a metal or vinyl edging product. This provides stability to the foundation while keeping weeds at bay.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and colors. Try blending in various stones, tiles or bricks to create a mosaic design.
- Make sure to fill in the cracks between stones with something like sand. This improves stability but provides proper drainage at the same time.
Pick Functional Furniture
What do you plan to use your patio for this year? That’s a question you should ask before buying new furniture or rearranging your current pieces. If you imagine the patio as a place your family can enjoy some barbecue, consider a table and chairs. If you want it more for entertaining or conversation, maybe create seating groups with small tables that hold plates and glasses.
What’s Your Upgrade?
You’re giving the patio a makeover, so figure out what you want to upgrade. If you grill often, maybe you should consider expanding on that and adding an outdoor kitchen. If you like to sit outside even when the evening is cool, perhaps a firepit makes sense. You can turn your patio into an outdoor room right for any season by adding a cover, fireplace and ceiling fan.
Even if you don’t get everything done this year, think ahead about upgrades for the future. This patio project might be one that goes on for a few seasons.
Get Some Green
Landscaping is a large part of most patio designs, so what will yours look like? Do you want floral edging on the patio or does container gardening make more sense for your layout? It doesn’t have to be one or the other, either. There is no rule that says you can’t have a little of each to add even more living color.
When setting out containers, let them do more than just decorate. For instance, you might place attractive urns with flowers along a walkway to create a floral wall for privacy. Use planters to section off different seating areas, as well, to make them more intimate.
Add some Chic Touches
The flooring is done, you have your upgrades in place or at least planned out and the furniture is set, now what? Consider those little touches that say this is my space. How about an outdoor area rug to add some color or a metal sculpture hanging just to the side of the patio doors to generate conversation? Splash in designer chic using whatever works for you from flags to patio pillows. You don’t have to spend a fortune on extras, either. Hunt for treasure at garage sales or at local thrift stores.
Your patio is more than the place you hide the grill. Make it an intricate part of your home with an exciting spring makeover this year.
